Tennessee Library Honored for Defending Spanish-Language Books
In the midst of a backlash against immigration in Central Tennessee, the leaders of Marshall County Memorial Library (MCML), Lewisburg, TN, stood their ground in defending the provision of Spanish-language materials and service to Spanish speakers. For that, director Jan Allen and board chair John Rawe, were awarded the Tennessee Library Association's (TLA) Intellectual Freedom Award on April 10, at the TLA annual meeting.

Grandes Wins Big For El corazón helado
Spanish writer Almudena Grandes’s novel El corazón helado ("The Frozen Heart," Tusquets, 2007) won this year’s VII Premio de Novela Fundación José Manuel Lara, earning her €150,000 (about $238,000) and the honor of penning the best novel published worldwide in Spanish in 2007. The novel tells the stories of two families’ drastically different lives during the Spanish Civil War and the Franco dictatorship.

AAP Announces Reading List for Latino Books Month
In its ongoing commitment to promoting books by and for Latinos, in both English and Spanish, the Publishing Latino Voices for America Task Force (PLVA) of the Association of American Publishers (AAP) announced its recommended reading list for May 2008, the fifth annual Latino Books Month. During the month-long celebration, U.S. book professionals will encourage people in their communities to read books by, for, and about Latinos. PLVA was formed in 2002 in recognition of the growing Latino community in the United States and the growing market for books, including those in Spanish.
